What is XHTML?

XHTML is a reorientation of the HTML 4 standard into XML.  In other words, XHTML takes HTML, the publishing language of the world-wide web, and makes it extensible to allow for it to grow and develop while maintaining compatibility with older web browsers.  Because HTML is no longer being advanced outside of XHTML, XHTML can be considered the new HTML for all intents and purposes.
