What does ISO stand for?

While many people think otherwise, ISO is not actually an acronym but rather refers to the International Organization for Standardization.  Because of the difference between the name in English and the short form, many people also believe that, like many other international organizations, ISO comes from the French version.  Yet, that's actually not the case.  ISO, commonly pronounced eye·so, comes from the Greek word isos, meaning equal.  Since most other international and standards organizations identified by all capital letters actually do have corresponding names, ISO is thus the least standard of the standards organizations.
