ARCHIVE / What is PostgreSQL?

PostgreSQL is an open-source relational database management system (RDBMS) and the only truly enterprise-class open-source database server software in existence.  PostgreSQL is often compared with Oracle in terms of features due to its exceptional extensibility and, of course, its price.  By being free of cost, PostgreSQL has powered many small and growing companies that would not otherwise have been able to afford an enterprise-class database management system.
