ARCHIVE / What is JavaScript?

JavaScript, often written as "Javascript", is a scripting language originally developed by Netscape, now a subsidiary of America Online (AOL).  When JavaScript debuted for use with version 2 of Netscape's Navigator software, JavaScript became the first scripting language to be used within a web client and, due to the popularity of Netscape's browsers, has since become the standard.  Though the naming of JavaScript may indicate otherwise, JavaScript bears no relation to the Java programming language, though both languages draw from the syntax used by the C programming language.  Rather, the similarity comes from a co-branding deal between Netscape and Sun Microsystems, the developer of the Java programming language.
