ARCHIVE / What does HTML stand for?
The HTML initialism stands for HyperText Markup Language. Initially, what is now simply referred to as the Web was thought of as a world-wide web or network of hypertextual links connecting pages of text. The concept of hypertext was used to distinguish static text such as that in a book from text that was actively linked to other pages. As such, HTML is the language used to tell web browsers what to display and what to link to.
